Since Glock released the Gen 6, the question we get most is simple: will my holster fit? Here's our straight answer, shooter to shooter.

Which Glock Gen 6 Models Exist?

Glock's Gen 6 announcement lists three US models at launch: the G17 Gen 6 (full size), the G19 Gen 6 (compact) and the G45 Gen 6 (G17-length frame with G19-length slide). All three are chambered in 9mm Luger.

Guns.com reports that a G49 Gen 6 launched outside the US, and that more models are expected. As of this update, no Gen 6 versions of the G43X, G48, G26 or larger-caliber frames have been announced for the US.

What Changed on the Glock Gen 6 (and What Didn't)?

Changes that can touch a holster

• Enlarged beavertail and grip tang. This sits at the rear of the frame, where a holster's sweat guard and body side sit.
• Palm swell and extended thumb rest. These change the grip contour above the trigger guard on the frame.
• More undercut trigger guard. Glock moved the trigger guard closer to the grip for a higher hold.
• Direct-mount optic system. Standard-frame Gen 6 pistols ship optic-ready with three plates that screw directly into the slide, replacing MOS. Guns.com reports a lower optic height as a result.
• Slide stop area. Guns.com notes a slightly wider ambidextrous slide stop, and Shoot-On notes more frame protection around it.

What stayed the same

Glock kept legacy magazine and sight compatibility, according to Glock and Guns.com. The general slide shape, barrel length per model and frame width carry over closely enough that reviewers fit the Gen 6 in existing Glock holsters, including tight custom Kydex in Shoot-On's test.

Most internal parts are new and not interchangeable with Gen 5. That matters for gunsmithing, not for holster choice.

Glock Gen 6 vs C&G GEN6 Molds: Not the Same Thing

Here's where it gets confusing, and we own that. GEN6 is the name of our sixth-generation Kydex holster design. We named it before Glock's Gen 6 pistol existed, and it refers to the holster, not the gun. Every GEN6 holster starts with a 3D-scanned, CAD-modeled design and a CNC-machined aluminum mold built to a 0.003" tolerance, with optic clearance, reinforcing ribs and adjustable retention.

So a holster tagged GEN6 in our store tells you the holster design. The model line in the title, such as GLOCK 19/23/44/45, tells you which pistol it was molded for. Our full GEN6 collection covers many brands, not only Glock.

Do Gen 5 Holsters Fit Gen 6 Glocks?

Usually, according to independent testing. Guns.com says most Gen 5 holsters are compatible and recommends testing retention in precision-molded Kydex. Shoot-On reports its G45 Gen 6 fit earlier Glock holsters in leather, Kydex and Bolatron.

How to fit-test a holster on a Gen 6

1. Unload the pistol, remove the magazine and lock the slide to confirm it is clear.
2. Insert the pistol and listen for a clean retention click.
3. Check that the beavertail does not bind on the sweat guard and that the trigger guard is fully covered.
4. Draw slowly ten times, then at normal speed, watching for drag or binding.
5. Adjust the retention screws in small steps if needed.
6. If it binds, does not click or covers the trigger poorly, do not carry it. Contact the maker.

What Is the Best Light-Bearing Holster for a Glock 19 or 45 Gen 6?

A light-bearing holster is molded around both the pistol and the light, so it must match the exact light model. C&G's Glock 19/23/44/45 light-bearing holsters are made for the Streamlight TLR-7, TLR-7 A and TLR-7 X, and the light must be mounted for the holster to retain properly.
