Clearance Is Not Automatic
Most modern pistols ship optics-ready. A holster molded for iron sights alone will not reliably clear a mounted red dot. The optic adds height and a new profile above the rear of the slide. Many setups also use taller suppressor-height or co-witness iron sights, which require additional clearance in the sight channel.
C&G Holsters GEN6 molds are CNC-machined to 0.003" tolerance. Optics-ready shells include a cut that clears common red dot footprints and a tall sight channel for suppressor-height sights. Each holster is fit-tested with the listed configuration before it ships.
What Actually Changes
- Optic clearance — The shell must provide space for the specific optic housing. Open-emitter optics (RMR, Holosun 507C) and enclosed-emitter optics (ACRO, EPS) have different external profiles. A listing that says “fits most RMR/red dots” covers the common footprints; note any larger optic such as an SRO in the order comments.
- Sight channel height — Suppressor-height or co-witness sights sit higher than standard irons. A standard sight channel can contact the front sight and prevent full seating or create drag on the draw.
- Retention geometry — Retention occurs on the slide and trigger guard. An optic cut should not reduce contact in those areas. A properly designed optics-ready shell maintains the same audible click and retention as the iron-sight version of the same model.
- Draw path — The cut must allow a straight, consistent draw without the optic or tall sights contacting the shell.
An optics-ready holster will generally accept the same pistol with the optic removed, provided retention is not dependent on the optic itself. The reverse is not true.
Practical Checks Before Ordering
Confirm the following against the individual product page:
- Exact pistol model and generation.
- Optic footprint (RMR, RMSc/Shield, DeltaPoint Pro, ACRO, EPS, or other). Note any adapter plate, which adds height.
- Presence of suppressor-height or co-witness iron sights.
- Any weapon light (light-bearing shells require a dedicated TACTICAL mold).
