Why Level 2 Retention Is the Professional Standard
Level 2 retention means your holster has a secondary retention device beyond passive friction. A mechanical lock, hood, or strap must be deliberately defeated before the firearm can be drawn. It is the baseline for anyone who carries a firearm in a role where someone might try to take it from them.
For years, many professionals avoided Level 2 systems because thumb-break designs slowed the draw. That separate swipe motion added time and introduced a failure point under stress. The rotating hood changed the equation. It engages and disengages during a single, natural draw motion without forcing you to break your grip or alter your wrist angle.
The IDPA 2026 Rulebook (Ver. 2026.2, effective January 10, 2026) requires active-duty law enforcement and military personnel using duty rigs to have at least one retention feature fully engaged. Level 2 is the minimum. Under USPSA 2026 rules, retention hoods must be fully engaged before the Standby command. The TRINITY's rotating hood is fully legal in both rulesets. It sits at the sweet spot where security and speed stop being a tradeoff.
How the TRINITY's Rotating Hood System Actually Works
The TRINITY's Level 2 retention centers on a rotating hood that sits over the rear of the slide. During the draw stroke, your thumb pushes the hood forward as part of the natural upward motion. The hood rotates clear and the firearm releases. There is no separate lever, no push-button, no extra step. Your hand goes to the gun, your thumb engages the hood, and the gun comes out.
Compare that to a traditional thumb-break. With a thumb break, you reach for the firearm and then perform a distinct swiping motion to release the snap. That swipe forces your thumb away from its natural position on the frame, which means you have to re-establish your grip before you can press the trigger. The rotating hood eliminates that entirely. Your draw motion is identical whether the hood is engaged or not.
That consistency matters for muscle memory. You train one draw. You execute one draw. The hood adds no separate cognitive step under stress.
When you reholster, the firearm seats with an audible click that provides both tactile and auditory confirmation. For law enforcement officers reholstering under stress, in low-light environments, or during dynamic situations, that click is a critical safety signal. You know the gun is locked without looking down.
In a 60-day independent carry review, Guns and Ammo recorded an average draw-to-fire time of 1.65 seconds with the TRINITY's Level 2 hood fully engaged. That is not a manufacturer claim. That is a third-party result, verified over two months of daily carry. Other holster brands describe Level 2 retention in generic terms. The TRINITY's rotating hood is a specific, engineered solution with documented performance data behind it.
0.125-Inch Kydex and CNC Precision: The Build That Backs It Up
The TRINITY shell is formed from 0.125-inch thick Kydex, significantly thicker than the 0.08-inch double-layer designs common among competitors. The difference is not cosmetic. Thicker Kydex delivers superior structural rigidity, which means retention pressure stays consistent over thousands of draw cycles. The holster does not soften, warp, or lose its shape.
Every TRINITY is CNC-machined to our GEN6 standards: 0.003-inch precision tolerance, achieved through 3D scanning and CAD modeling of each firearm. The result is a perfect, repeatable fit. Every holster for a given model comes out identical. No hand-fitting, no guesswork, no variation from unit to unit.
Built into the shell are Hyder ribs, stiffening ribs placed at critical stress points to reinforce the structure and prevent cracking or breakage under hard field use. If you have ever seen a thinner Kydex holster crack at the belt loop or along the trigger guard after months of patrol, you understand why this matters. The Hyder rib system addresses a real-world failure mode that thinner shells cannot survive.
The Kydex itself is antimicrobial, moisture-resistant, heat-resistant, impact-resistant, and odor-resistant. It cleans with a damp cloth. For officers wearing a duty rig 8 to 12 hours a day, these properties are baseline requirements, not luxury features.
All hardware is treated with salt bath nitriding for rust and corrosion prevention, backed by a lifetime warranty. Every TRINITY is 100% made in the USA at our facility in Pennsylvania by U.S. Military Veterans and Law Enforcement personnel, using materials sourced from local American businesses. The TRINITY is tested and recommended by the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA).
For a concrete example of what GEN6 precision looks like in a competition-ready package, the GLOCK 34/35 TRINITY Kydex Holster System is available via Quickship with the same 0.125-inch Kydex and CNC tolerances as every other model in the lineup.
One Holster, Every Platform: The TRINITY's Multi-Mount Backplate
The TRINITY's advanced mounting backplate supports Blade-Tech Tek-Lok, Tek-Mount, and Duty Drop & Offset; Safariland QLS; G-Code; RTI Hanger; Paddle; and drop-leg systems. No additional adapters required. One holster body connects to every major mounting platform on the market.
For professionals who rotate between patrol, plainclothes, and competition, this eliminates the need to buy and maintain separate holsters for each role. One TRINITY body adapts to all of them, reducing both cost and the gear you need to keep organized and maintained.
The standard belt attachment is the Bladetech Tek-Lok, fitting belts up to 2.25 inches wide with MOLLE compatibility. A DOTS attachment for belts up to 2 inches is available at no additional charge.
On the optics side, the TRINITY's open-bottom design accommodates suppressor-height sights, threaded barrels, SROs, ACRO P-2s, and a wide range of red dot optics without any fitment modifications. As red dots become standard on duty and competition handguns, universal compatibility is no longer optional. The speed-cut geometry ensures unobstructed draws regardless of optic or barrel configuration.
Most competitors treat mounting as an afterthought. We built it into the foundation of the system, making the multi-platform backplate a single cost-saving and versatility solution for professional buyers.
Ergonomics, Comfort, and the Quickship Guarantee
The TRINITY shell is ergonomically molded to follow natural hip contours and holster angles. This is not a flat slab of Kydex bolted to a belt loop. The shape accounts for how the holster sits against your body during movement, sitting, driving, and standing. Guns and Ammo awarded it a 5/5 comfort rating during their 60-day review, a score that reflects daily wear over 8-to-12-hour periods.
Comfort is a performance factor. Fatigue and discomfort cause officers and shooters to adjust their holster position, shift their belt, or remove the rig entirely during breaks. Every adjustment is a variable. The TRINITY's fit eliminates that variable so you can focus on the job.
Most premium custom holster makers carry lead times of 4 to 12 weeks. That is a real problem if you need a holster for an upcoming qualification, a deployment, or a competition. Our Quickship guarantee delivers in 5 business days from order date. For fully custom color configurations, the lead time is 15 business days. Both options are backed by the same lifetime warranty.
C&G Holsters was founded by Christopher J. Burns, a retired Law Enforcement Officer and Master Firearms Instructor who started making holsters in his garage in Brackenridge, Pennsylvania in 2008. That professional DNA runs through every product we build. Our team of Veterans, LEOs, and competitive shooters does not just assemble holsters. They carry them. With over 4,200 verified customer reviews and an NTOA recommendation, the TRINITY's comfort and retention claims are backed by the people who depend on them most.
